CURRENT EVENTS/PRESS RELEASES:
Remarks of Yvonne Grassie, President of United Wag, at the March 2, 2008, announcement of the 2008 Student Short Film Competition winners. The competition is sponsored by the Miami Coalition for the Homeless:
Welcome everyone; congratulations to the finalists and thank you to all the participants for caring about the issues surrounding homelessness and for supporting the MCH Film Competition. In addition to sitting on the Coalition Board, I am also the President of United WAG, a not for profit we established three years ago to work on the root causes of animal abuse and abandonment. I’m here to present to our winner today, as part of the prize package, a contract from UWAG to produce a short film or PSA to educate the public about animal welfare.
As many of you may know, the way we treat our animals is often a very good indication of how we will treat human beings. UWAG has prepared and provided to the MDC Public Schools animal welfare curriculum that is part of the character education curriculum for grades K-8. We are hoping that the film which is produced under this contract with UWAG will form part of our up-coming educational efforts at the high school level. By educating people, and especially children and young adults, about animal welfare, we believe we will create a more socially responsible population which will benefit all of us, including homeless animals and people.
The winner will work with a team of established film professionals here in South Florida to produce the PSA and will receive a stipend from UWAG for the work. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product and to next year’s MCH Film Competition. Please join me in congratulating our winner, Kayla O'Brien.

Noah's Story:
Noah was just three months old when he was rescued from an abusive owner. He was being beaten and tied up under a deck but a neighbor decided to intervene and rescued him. He now lives with two loving parents who dote on him and let him sleep in bed with them. Despite his horrible introduction to the human race, Noah is a sweet, playful puppy who loves all creatures equally. |
