* United WAG Hosts Dog Park Exhibition Two Years in a Row at the Youth Fair! *

United WAG had a very successful first year competition at the 2010 Fair.  Last year, four (4) middle schools and fourteen (14) high schools competed in the Bark Park Design contest.  Two (2) dog parks were created at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair as part of the United WAG Bark Park Design & “Pawfect” Pet Sculpture Exhibit.  The 2010 Fair advised that at least 85% of the 564,600 attendance passed by the exhibit sponsored by United WAG.

Building on the success of last year’s Fair, at the 2011 Fair United WAG again hosted a Bark Park Design Contest for middle school students as well as high school students.  Judging took place on March 17, 2011.  A team from John A. Ferguson High School won the Grand Champion prize and placed first out of all the participating high school teams.  Coconut Palm K-8 Academy was the first place among middle schools.  For more information about the 2010 Fair or the 2011 Fair, contact

* Animal Welfare Education Spanning the Generations: A New Service Learning Project *

United WAG has teamed up with Miami-Dade Community College’s Honors College students and Edison Park Elementary to form a valuable collaboration that could be recognized and duplicated across Miami-Dade County.

Working with M-DCPS’s Division of Social Sciences, United WAG’s staff has developed a series of lesson plans for grades K-8, aligned with the nine Character Education components and addressing animal welfare.  These lessons in their entirety are available by clicking on the “Animal Welfare Education” link under the menu to the left.

Fifteen Miami-Dade Honors College students, under the guidance of Yvette Lujan, have identified  three lessons to be presented to elementary students.  They have worked with staff from United WAG to learn the skills of delivery and interaction with elementary school students.

Administrators at Edison Park Elementary School have created a schedule whereby the college students, in teams of two, can go into the classroom and give 30-minute presentations to the students.  The 2009 presentation schedule may be found here: Edison_Park_Elementary_School_Schedule – 2009.

The Miami-Dade Community College coverage of the United WAG/Edison Park Elementary/Miami-Dade Community College partnership is currently running on its TV station!  Please go to the following web site, click on In Focus – the UWAG collaboration is the third story that runs:
