Get Informed

Every day, UWAG is acting proactively to implement its mission.  Below and throughout this site, please find more information about our current projects.  Inform yourself on how you can help prevent the abuse and abandonment of companion animals.  There is no better time than now to take affirmative steps to help those who can’t help themselves.

Current Projects:

  • Animal Welfare Education.  Write and implement comprehensive elementary school and middle school animal welfare lesson plans and resources as part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Character Education curriculum for implementation in the 2009-2010 academic year.  In this connection, UWAG is working with local book stores and the Parent Academy to use the animal welfare curriculum for community events to raise awareness about animal abuse and abandonment.

  • Establishment of a County-Wide Spay/Neuter Program.  Develop a spay/neuter program in partnership with the Animal Services Department of Miami-Dade County (”ASD”) and community activists to more fully utilize the County’s Mobile Animal Clinic and increase community education about the benefits of increased spay/neutering of animals to control animal overpopulation and decrease the incidence of animal abuse and abandonment.

  • Anti-Tethering Advocacy.  Worked with a legislative initiatives committee of ASD employees and community activists to prepare suggested revisions and updates to those Code provisions.  The revised Code provisions were presented for approval to the Miami-Dade County Commission.  Proposed, as part of this legislative committee, an anti-tethering ordinance that the Miami-Dade County Commission eventually enacted after making minor changes.
